Does Nails breathe

Some of you may have heard from a client or 2 that she needs to let her nails breathe for a while…….

Well, that is a BIG myth. Since nails do not have lung’s they cannot breathe. If we (as Nail Technicians) take great care of the natural nail, nails do not have to be rested to recover from wearing product for some time. I have worn nail enhancements for the last 20 years and never felt the need for a breather or time off for my nails to recover.

Nail Extensions cannot harm the natural nail. Doug Schoon, a leading scientist in the nail and beauty industry assures us that nail enhancement products are very safe for the natural nail if used in accordance with manufacturer rules and regulations.

So why do we still have clients asking for time out…..

Since the beginning of nail enhancements,so many lies and marketing scare tactics were used to get us to buy their products. For instance, acid primers are harmful to the natural nail since it is corrosive. Well, fact is Acid primers are not corrosive at all and no more harmful than non-acid primers. All these scare marketing phrases filled the media and our clients paid attention to all the gossip and make believes.

Client’s should never need a breather or time out if we (Nail Technicians) take special care of every natural nail that enters our salon. Do not use a nail file with grid lower than 180, preferably 240 on the natural nail. Educate your clients on maintaining natural healthy nails. Retail cuticle oils and educate clients on the importance of using it daily. Good hygiene is also key, specially when nails started lifting as this could prevent fungus and infection. Do not use E files on the natural nails. E files file at high speeds and can not only cause grooves in the nail, weakening the nail but also burn the nail plate. Excessive heat from the E file can cause discomfort and damage to the nail plate.

So, next time your client suggests that her nails should breathe, you now have a mouthful to answer in return.
